How to write high converting copy✍ by leveraging buyer psychology🧠
Hack your reader's brain to supercharge your sales!🚀

In this week’s newsletter I’m going to teach you the basics of Buyer Psychology so you can write high converting copy that ultimately drives sales.
What is Buyer Psychology?🧠
Buyer Psychology is the study of how consumers think, feel and decide when making a purchase. At its core, Buyer Psychology focuses on answering a critical question:
👉Why does someone choose one product or service over another❓
The answer lies in the complex interplay of logic & emotion. People justify purchases with logic but the decision is usually rooted in how they feel.
In sales copy, the principles of Buyer Psychology guide everyting from word choice to structure and tone. Rather than just listing features & the supporting benefits, it ensures the message resonates with the audience’s deeper needs and values.
When buyers feel understood, they’re more likely to trust the product and take the next step, whether it’s clicking a link, signing up for your newsletter or making a purchase.
5 Powerful Psychological Principles for writing High Conversion Sales Copy
The five key psychological principles covered below are based on the book ‘Leveraging Buyer Psychology’ by Ed McDonough.
1. The Desire for Emotional Fulfillment
👉Think about what emotional drivers influence your target market’s buying decisions.
People will buy your stuff either to solve a problem or achieve a goal, and to improve their lives in some way.
When you’re writing sales copy, think about the emotional drivers influencing your ideal client/customer & align your product or service with the buyer’s aspirations.
Top emotional drivers that align with buyer aspirations often revolve around the desire for validation, belonging, and a sense of well-being, as well as aspirations for status, recognition, and security.
2. Cognitive Ease
👉The easier your copy is to read, the quicker customers will make a purchase
When information is easy to understand and process, people are more likely to trust the message and take the desired action, such as making a purchase.
Cognitive ease in copywriting leads to improved comprehension & retention, increased trust & persuasion, faster decision-making and enhanced engagement.
It’s a fact that we look to other people for validation. Using testimonials, case studies or statistics taps into this tendency and builds credibility.
4. Scarcity & Urgency
👉 The fear of missing out (FOMO) can spark action so higlighting limited availability or deadlines taps into buyers’ natural aversion to loss.
Scarcity:
When something is perceived as scarce or limited, it becomes more desirable, even if it's not inherently high quality. This taps into a fundamental human drive to value and seek out rare items.

An example of how to use FOMO to create urgency & demand for your products or services
Urgency:
Urgency, often created through limited-time offers or deadlines, induces a sense of FOMO. This fear of missing out can override rational decision-making, pushing people to act quickly to avoid potential regret.
5. Reciprocity
👉When someone gives us something, we naturally feel the need to give something back.
Before you try to sell your products/services, offer potential customers/clients an incentive that offers real value such as a discount code or how-to-guide. This creates a subliminal sense of obligation in your potential buyer’s mind & makes them feel obligated to return the favour by engaging further.
