Why a killer hook is like swiping right on Tinder!

If you want to grab your reader’s attention - learn how to write a killer hook!

You want your ideal customer to stop the scroll and think : “Ooh… tell me more.”

The hook is usually the first line in an ad, social media post, landing page, blog headline, newsletter headline or sales email.

You could say that a hook is a bit like a dating bio on Tinder - its job is to reel your ideal customer/client in and get them to swipe right!

Limited attention spans - people scroll quickly & make split-second decisions about whether to engage with content. A weak hook allows them to scroll by without a second thought.

"Hook rate" - this metric, typically for video ads, measures the percentage of users who watch at least the first 3 seconds, demonstrating that the initial moments are crucial for capturing attention.

 First impressions count - - Like first impressions in real life, if your hook doesn’t grab the reader’s attention, the rest of your content won’t get a look in!

👉A killer hook must do 3 things:

  1. Trigger Emotion - make your reader feel something instantly — joy, nostalgia, excitement, pride, hunger.

  2. Spark Curiosity or Desire - promise something irresistible or leave a gap the brain needs to fill.

  3. Stick in Memory - use rhythm, brevity, repetition, or unexpected phrasing
